Curriculum

Science

At Mel Maria Catholic Primary School, our Science Program nurtures students’ natural curiosity and deepens their connection with the world around them through, hands-on investigative learning. We strive to create an environment where students feel safe to ask questions, explore ideas, and experiment with confidence, laying a strong foundation for future scientific learning.

Program Highlights

Inspiring Wonder Through Exploration
Our students engage in rich, sensory experiences that promote both cognitive and physical involvement. By exploring the natural world firsthand, they learn to observe, question, and think like scientists.

Hands-on, Real-World Learning
From exciting chemical reaction experiments to observing living creatures, students are encouraged to actively participate in investigations that make science tangible and relevant to their lives.

Building Scientific Thinking
We explicitly teach essential scientific skills such as observation, planning, data recording, analysis, and critical thinking. Students learn to make predictions, test hypotheses, and interpret results in meaningful contexts.

Learning in Action

At Mel Maria Catholic Primary School, students take part in a diverse range of hands-on experiments across the key strands of science: Chemical Science, Biological Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science. These engaging investigations spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and make scientific concepts come alive.

  • In Chemical Science, students explore how materials change and interact. Through experiments like mixing substances to create reactions, testing absorbency and insulation, or making simple mixtures and solutions, children develop an understanding of everyday chemistry in a safe and fun environment.
  • In Biological Science, students investigate the world of living things. They might observe life cycles, classify animals and plants, or explore ecosystems and the needs of living organisms — often through interactive experiences like growing plants or meeting live creatures.
  • In Physical Science, students explore the principles of forces, motion, sound, light, and energy. Activities could include building simple machines, investigating how objects move, experimenting with magnets, or exploring how light travels and reflects — all designed to encourage critical thinking and experimentation.
  • In Earth and Space Science, students are encouraged to look beyond themselves, investigating natural phenomena like the weather, the seasons, the water cycle, and the solar system. Whether it’s modelling volcanoes, exploring rocks and soils, or tracking the phases of the moon, students develop a sense of wonder about the planet and universe we live in.

Through these rich and varied experiences, students gain not only knowledge but also the skills and confidence to ask questions, seek answers, and appreciate the vital role of science in their everyday lives and the future of our world.
